Vaidya Manohar worked closely with Maharishi for many decades promoting Maharishi Ayurveda worldwide. For several years he worked closely with Balraj Maharishi, who was a world expert in the use of herbs and plants to restore health. Vaidya Manohar was directly involved in the development of a number of the herbal formulas used in Maharishi Ayurveda, and has special expertise in Maharishi's Consciousness-Based Approach to Health.

The interviewer asked him how he became interested in Ayurveda, and what distinguishes Maharishi AyurVeda from what is simply called AyurVeda. Also He asked, what inspired his career of over 35 years in Maharishi Ayurveda?

Dr. Manohar:

“I wanted to please my father, but especially, it was my grandfather who inspired me. The consensus was—father, grandfather, eldest brother all agreed—I should go to medical school. My mother never pushed me; she was always supportive—her love allowed me to take a leap. . . . into an unknown—the world of medicine,” said Manohar.

“My mother kept all of us healthy. We never once went to a doctor or took medicine,” he told me, in a voice breaking with pride. When he spoke about his mother, it reminded me of Maharishi speaking about love. Love is the most powerful ingredient in any recipe—it infuses a dish with the most delicious, nurturing quality. It is the essence of health.

Manohar was a star in school—at the top of his class—and everyone expected him to excel. After attending junior college, his family decided that he should enroll in an Ayurvedic Institution only 100 km from the village he grew up in, called NRS Government Ayurveda College, Andhra University, to be later affiliated with Nagarjuna University. In 1983, After 5 & 1/2 years, he earned his Bachelor of Ayurveda Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) degree.

He learned the Sanskrit Slokas and all about Vata, Pitta and Kapha, but Manohar knew something was missing. Upon graduation, Manohar told his mother that he would be locking up all his text books in a trunk, as he didn’t know how to use what he had learned about AyurVeda. His mother was supportive, and advised him to do whatever would make him happiest. His father, grandfather and eldest brother probed further—perhaps, after all, he should attend a traditional medical school?

Manohar found something that the entire family would learn to endorse—in uncharted territory. After a brief stint with anatomy and bioscience, Manohar saw an advertisement in the newspaper. Maharishi Mahesh Yogi was calling all AyurVedic Physicians to join him in Delhi.

It felt right, and drew him like a magnet, along with over 200 AyurVedic physicians. What he learned brought wholeness to his understanding of AyurVeda. He knew without a doubt that Maharishi’s knowledge was what he was waiting for, and the missing link in his education and indeed, his life.

In 1992, the Raj in Fairfield, Iowa opened, and Manohar spent many years there doing consultations. He started full-time at first, but then worked part-time, as he began touring in the US and Canada. Manohar began touring worldwide, teaching and doing consultations. In 1995, Manohar began the Disease Eradication Program, working with doctors to open clinics worldwide and to educate and publicize Maharishi Ayurveda. He also taught courses at MUM and worked with doctors at the clinic in Lancaster, MA. Maharishi AyurVeda was steadily gaining recognition, helping individuals regain health and balance, without side-effects.

Manohar now goes back and forth between Japan and India, but occasionally travels to Europe and Canada to do consultations and teach. He recently did a course in Seoul, South Korea, where he taught Maharishi AyurVeda to over 20 physicians who practice Functional Medicine. (Functional Medicine works on the cellular level, where the predisposition to disease arises, using prescriptive minerals and spices, like AyurVedic spices, ginger and tumeric).

Vaidya Manohar is now offering a new webinar series on different Maharishi AyurVeda topics through Maharishi University of Management.
