The World Association for Vedic Studies (WAVES) held their Eleventh Bi-Annual International Conference at Maharishi University of Management (MUM) from July 31 to August 3. The theme of this year’s conference was “Vedic Living in a Modern World.”

WAVES is a multidisciplinary academic society. It is a forum for all scholarly activities and views on any area of Vedic studies (variously called Indian studies, South Asian studies, or Indology).

Over 100 speakers gave presentations on topics such as yoga, natural medicine, higher states of consciousness, and reflections on the various Vedic texts. About half the scholars represented MUM, while the other half came from the US, India, Canada, and Holland.

MUM faculty speakers included world-renowned physicist Dr. John Hagelin; Dr. Robert Schneider, director, Center for Natural Medicine and Prevention; Dr. Fred Travis, director for the Center for Brain, Consciousness, and Cognition; and MUM Executive Vice President Dr. Craig Pearson.

Guest presentations included Dr. P.C. Muraleemadhavan from the University of Sanskrit in Kerala, India; Rajiv Malhotra, founder of the Infinity Foundation; and Dr. T.S. Rukmani, chair of Hindu Studies at Concordia University, Montreal, Canada.

“The WAVES Board of Directors proclaimed that this was one of the most successful WAVES conferences ever and without a doubt the best organized,” said Dr. Candace Badgett, chairperson of the Global Mother Divine Organization and one of the principal organizers. “The participation from the Fairfield community was beyond our expectations, with over 500 people attending and many more connecting via MUM live stream TV.”

WAVES appointed Dr. Peter Scharf, president of the Sanskrit Library, as co-chair of the conference, along with Dr. Shashi Tiwari, a distinguished Sanskrit scholar from the University of Delhi. Other organizers included Dr. David Scharf of MUM, the Maharishi Vedic Science Department, and many MUM administrators.
