The National Education Awards for a special High School in Israel

In 2008 the high school in Israel, where the faculty and students practise the Transcendental Meditation Technique, received second place in National Education Award for the way the problem of discipline in the school was handled. 'This is because of meditation—because meditation is at the core of everything we did,’ said the school’s Principal, Abed Elsalam Masalcha, about the success of the Consciousness-Based Education programme in his school.

In 2009 this high school received third place in the National Education Awards. The Education Award Committee justified its decision in these words:

'The Award was given to the school for its programme in preventing violence and improving the school's environment based on the Consciousness-Based Education programme. This Consciousness-Based Education programme is based upon the development of both teachers' and students' abilities and uncovers the unlimited creative potential of the human being.

‘The programme prevents the problems by tackling them at the root and provides the base of actualization of both the scholastic aspirations of students, teachers, and parents.

‘The most important element of the Consciousness-Based Education programme is the Transcendental Meditation Programme. It is a simple, natural mental technique that improves behaviour and the ability to learn. It elicits success and enjoyment in learning; creates a focused atmosphere in the classroom; improves academic achievement; increases self-esteem; reduces violence and chaos, and increases teacher satisfaction in their work.

‘The teachers, school board, and parents are involved at all levels of the programme and closely follow the process in the school.'

From his experience with the Transcendental Meditation Technique, one of the students says that he thinks that ‘If the entire world would meditate, then there would be more peace, less violence, better relationships between people, more friends, a beautiful world—just like that.'
