‘Unless one has the experience of pure consciousness, the Veda, the totality of knowledge, will not become a living reality.’ — Maharishi

The totality of knowledge is structured in consciousness

During this talk* given on 17 February 1974 in Interlaken, Switzerland, Maharishi explained that from quantum physics we know that attention enlivens the object of perception. Maharishi said that when our attention goes to the state of transcendence it enlivens that silent level of consciousness. In this experience fullness is created from nothingness. This is the beginning of the expression of matter.

Maharishi explained the verse from Rk Veda, Richo ak-kshare parame vyoman (Rk Veda, 1.164.39)—‘the Richa, the expression of knowledge, is structured in consciousness.’ In the settled state of consciousness, the mechanics of structuring any expression comes to be perceived.

‘The Seers of the Rk Veda cognized the Laws of Nature structured in their own consciousness,’ Maharishi said. ‘In the experience of cognition, consciousness reverberated in the values of sound and form simultaneously.

‘The Richa, the hymns of the Veda, are structured in Ak-shara, the imperishable—in the transcendental value of Vyoman, the absolute, unmanifest, unbounded field of immortality.’

The characteristic of this field of immortality is described by Rk Veda as 'Yasmin deva adhi vishwe nisheduh'—'All the impulses of Creative Intelligence, the Laws of Nature, abide in the reverberating consciousness of the Seer, the knower.' The expressions of knowledge that the Seer cognizes are the expressions of his own consciousness.

‘Complete knowledge of the entirety of creation and evolution is contained in each Richa,’ Maharishi said. ‘Every Natural Law expressed in a cognition contains the wholeness of knowledge—knowledge of the finite and knowledge of the infinite.

‘Cognition is the transcendental expression of all knowledge, unfolded within the knower and therefore known in its entirety.’

The next verse of Rk Veda asks, 'Yastanna Veda kim richa karishyati'—‘He whose awareness is not open to the infinite, unbounded, immortal field of the Transcendent, what will the Richa accomplish for him?’

‘For knowledge to be lively it must be structured in consciousness,’ Maharishi said.

‘Pure consciousness is the material in which the total value of Natural Law is structured,’ Maharishi continued. ‘Since the Laws of Nature are eternal and imperishable, their lively expression requires that awareness be open to the field of immortality.’

'Ya it tad vidus tai me samasate'—‘He who knows it is evenly established in that wholeness of the total expression of Creative Intelligence.’

‘The systematic study of creativity through the Science of Creative Intelligence opens the awareness to the field of the unmanifest, unbounded, absolute value of intelligence, which is evenly permeating everywhere,’ Maharishi said. ‘Such an awareness can remain firmly established in evenness in the midst of all fields of activity.

‘The experience of evenness is the expression of infinite flexibility along with stability. In this experience awareness is lively in the infinite value of Creative Intelligence.

‘The experience of clear awakening to the mechanics of transformation of consciousness leads to that purified state of awareness in which the Laws of Nature are cognized directly within the cognizer. The knower is then the embodiment of knowledge.’

Maharishi told the MA Programme students that the ground for Vedic Studies had been prepared by their experience of Transcendental Consciousness. ‘Unless one has the experience of pure consciousness,’ he said, ‘the Veda, the totality of knowledge, will not become a living reality.’

With the experience of pure awareness through the Transcendental Meditation and Transcendental Meditation Sidhi Programme, one begins to experience how consciousness starts to transform itself into the mechanics of action. Vedic Studies provides the verification of these experiences from the ancient Vedic texts.
