Maharishi’s Science of Creative Intelligence creates fully cultured individuals

In May 1974 in Murren, Switzerland, Maharishi worked with educators to develop a course on the Science of Creative Intelligence for secondary education. The overall theme of this course is ‘Fullness of Life’.

In the first year the theme is ‘Receiving the Fullness of Life’. Students are given the knowledge of fullness of life in Nature. They begin to appreciate the qualities of Creative Intelligence as expressed in the lives of great men. The students themselves begin to experience the qualities of Creative Intelligence growing within through regular practice of the Transcendental Meditation Technique.

The theme of the second year is ‘Developing the Fullness of Life.’ Students study the principles that uphold the experience of the pure nature of Creative Intelligence and principles that uphold the development of Creative Intelligence.

The theme of the third year is ‘Living the Fullness of Life’. Students are given the knowledge of 24 disciplines and begin to appreciate the qualities of Creative Intelligence and the Laws of Nature through which they develop in a particular discipline. They see that these same Laws of Nature are involved in the development of Creative Intelligence in their own lives.

‘This is the first generation that has something tangible to make education ideal,’ Maharishi said. ‘A knowledge that is not only an aspect of intellectual understanding, but an aspect of the physiology as well.’

It is now common knowledge that different states of consciousness have a corresponding level of physiological functioning. With more and more students practising Transcendental Meditation, norms of physiology will be established for every higher level of consciousness.

This knowledge of the Science of Creative Intelligence, which cultures the mind, body, and behaviour simultaneously so that all aspects of life are not only integrated but ever-progressive in their structure, fulfils the ideal of education.

The Science of Creative Intelligence also fulfils the purpose of the values of every culture that are dedicated to culturing the individual personality, by creating a situation in the physiology so that the individual’s thought, action, speech, and perception are always in an evolutionary direction.

‘The custodians of every culture today are concerned with the influence of other cultures on their countries,’ Maharishi said. ‘The dignity of every culture is at stake due to the fast means of communication and the resulting intermixing of races.

‘It is the fully cultured individuals of every society who will be able to stabilize their cultural values on the basis of the great flexibility and stability developed in their nervous systems.

‘When through the daily practice of Transcendental Meditation, the practical aspect of the Science of Creative Intelligence, infinite flexibility and infinite stability are developed in the nervous system, the individual can move about in other cultures and yet remain steadfast in his own cultural dignity.’

Scientific research has shown that through Transcendental Meditation both intelligence and learning ability increase and academic performance improves.

Maharishi explained that the electrical synchrony found in the brain during Transcendental Meditation implies functional integration of various areas of the nervous system responsible for comprehension, verbal ability, memory, concentration, and judgement, all of which are necessary for successful study and continuing motivation for gaining knowledge.

The practice of Transcendental Meditation has also been shown to counteract sources of negativity in student life by creating a balanced psychology and emotional stability.

The beneficial effects of Transcendental Meditation and the Science of Creative Intelligence have been verified by personal experiences of teachers, students, and parents, and by scientific experiments.

‘We see that all that an ideal education would provide begins to be gained by every student through the knowledge of the Science Intelligence,’ Maharishi said.

‘This verification of the benefits of the Science of Creative Intelligence to mankind is great evidence that it is possible today to eliminate the age-old problems of mankind and establish an ideal system of education through which the future of the world will be in peace and happiness.’
