Music and Maharishi's Science of Creative Intelligence

In this talk, printed in the second of four volumes for educators entitled Maharishi Speaks to Educators: Mastery over Natural Law, Maharishi spoke to the faculty of Maharishi University of Management, saying that his Science of Creative Intelligence provides the knowledge that will allow music to fulfil its essential role of enabling man to understand his innermost Self and the outer-most limits of creation.

In classical Greek culture, music was recognized as one of the four mathematical sciences. In the modern world, however, music has continued to flourish as an art form, but has ceased to be a discipline through which the deepest Laws of Nature can be discerned.

Maharishi has said that music is the flow of consciousness. Without a science of consciousness, no comprehensive theory of music could be formulated. Now the Science of Creative Intelligence is that science of consciousness that is needed to bring fulfilment to the theory and practice of music.

‘The structuring of music sound is a replica of the mechanics of creation,’ Maharishi said. ‘Every tone starts from silence, from the unmanifest field, and within each tone is the potential form for all possible subsequent tones.

‘This is analogous to the first manifestation of creation, which contains within it a seed of all potentialities for further manifestation and evolution.’

In the Age of Enlightenment, music will provide the most profound knowledge of creation, and will fulfil the individual through the sublime knowledge of his own creativity.

‘Music is the flow of life,’ Maharishi continued, ‘the flow of absolute bliss consciousness. Since music is the flow of consciousness, the flow will be as delicate as the purity of the musician’s awareness.

‘Music has always been an inspiration for higher values of life. Through the upsurge of fine emotions generated by the delicate impulses of music, life becomes pure and rises to express the dignity of unboundedness and bliss, which is the nature of life.’

The most important aspect of a musician’s life is the delicacy of his own emotions. As stress is dissolved, and purity of consciousness grows through the practice of Maharishi’s Transcendental Meditation and Transcendental Meditation Sidhi Programme, the heart and emotions begin to flow in very delicate impulses. ‘That is the beginning of the melody of life,’ Maharishi said.

The purpose of music is to touch and refine the deep core of the heart, and thereby to purify the emotions. When the musician’s awareness pulsates in that most delicate value of life, he has a purifying influence on the whole society.

The tenderness of emotions developed through Maharishi’s Transcendental Meditation makes a musician successful and his music delightful. ‘The musician’s awareness must be so delicate as to be one with the impulses that constitute Cosmic Life, and then the thrills of music will be the song of eternity,’ said Maharishi.

During the practice of Transcendental Meditation the mind settles down to a state of perfect silence, the state of bliss consciousness. Through music one generates impulses of consciousness in order to bring this influence of bliss out into the field of daily activity.

‘The study of music makes every aspect of life musical, in tune with unboundedness,’ Maharishi continued. ‘Music raises life to Unity Consciousness, in which every boundary breathes the melody of the unbounded.

‘Creation is full of differences. The purpose of music is to establish harmony and unity in the midst of all differences and to harmonize differences to produce something more than the collection of parts: wholeness of life.

‘Music is the flow of consciousness, and consciousness is the home of all the Laws of Nature. By creating thrills in pure consciousness, the musician is able to utilize the total influence of all the Laws of Nature. Music arising from pure consciousness is the eternal music of universal life.

‘It is an intellectual joy to study the laws involved in structuring music, but the development of musical talent will be on the basis of the development of purity of emotions.’
