Mikaila Maidment has been drawing for as long as she could pick up a pencil. Her love of painting and drawing led her to study art at Maharishi University of Management, where she received a BFA and then an MFA. Since then, she has painted murals in Ireland, illustrated children's books, and graphically designed products for a variety of companies. For a year, she also worked on the faculty of MUM teaching drawing and painting.

Mikaila was 12 when she moved to Fairfield from British Columbia with her family to attend Maharishi School. She has practiced the Transcendental Meditation technique since childhood so she felt right at home with Consciousness-Based education.

“For me MUM is about balance,” Mikaila said. “That’s why I wanted to go to MUM. I didn’t want to sacrifice other parts of my life to study art. I wanted to be a healthy, balanced person. Because there is so much going inward at MUM, I feel that’s exactly what the artistic process is like.”

Mikaila loves telling stories with her paintings. When 1st World Publishing, a Fairfield company helping authors publish their books professionally, asked her to illustrate children’s books, she didn’t have to think twice about it—she landed her dream job and has already illustrated 7 books, 3 of which have been published.

As a freelance artist, Mikaila has also ventured into graphic design, working on projects such as logos, packaging, and product design. She feels every project adds to her artistic repertoire and inspires her to explore her creativity.

“I had a really solid art education with Geoffrey Baker, Jim Shrosbree, and Juliette Daley at MUM.” said Mikaila. “I think that’s why I have been able to go into all of these avenues, because the foundation was so strong.”

Mikaila is now looking forward to adding even more narrative quality to her work by exploring other genres such as the graphic novel.
