The Maharishi School boys tennis team earned second place in May in the state 1A tennis tournament, culminating yet another outstanding tennis
season.
In the semifinal of the team competition, the boys defeated a tough team from Boone in a battle that lasted several hours. However, in the final they fell to Dubuque Wahlert, a school that's 10 times larger than Maharishi
School.
In order to qualify for the state tournament, the team won the district competition and two matches at substate, defeating a strong team from Grinnell in the final.
This was the team's 14th trip to the final four of the state competition in the 24 years of the School's tennis program—tying a statewide record. They've won the championship four times, have placed second seven times, and have never placed lower than third.
The boys also own seven singles titles and five doubles championships.
Four of the players also qualified for the state individual tournament, with the doubles team of Thomas Weiss and Derek Thatcher placing third.
Sam Arsanjani and Raphael Gelfand qualified for state singles by winning first and second place in the regional tournament. At state, they each won a match but didn't place.
Filling out the roster at the state competition were Solaris Nite and Brenton Schwartz.
In the girls competition, Minna Mohammadi qualified for state but didn't place.
