China and the United States Shake Hands at Maharishi University of Management

Part 2—Chinese Traditional Values and Interest in Education Correspond to the Ideals of Consciousness-Based Education

In September of 2006, China indicated interest in Maharishi Consciousness-Based Education, when it welcomed a delegation from Maharishi University of Management. A delegation led by Physics Professor John Hagelin, who has been recognized worldwide as a scientist in the tradition of Einstein, Jeans, Bohr, and Eddinton, toured China at that time, giving presentations on Consciousness-Based Education and correlating its basis with ancient Chinese wisdom. The tour generated considerable interest and resonated harmoniously with the country’s evolving values and goals.

Six agreements were signed by school principals, paving the way for the University and Maharishi School to introduce Consciousness-Based Education in China. In addition, endorsements were received from officials of Chinese education bureaus who are supporting its introduction. Steps are now underway to get the final approvals for implementation.

Dr Zhu Yunxiang, associate dean of Asia expansion—who was the driving force in the tour’s organization— explained that China's enthusiastic response to the delegation was influenced by the correspondence between ancient Chinese culture, modern quantum physics, and Maharishi Vedic Science.

‘Dr Hagelin’s linking modern science, Maharishi Vedic Science, and Tao, which is Chinese traditional wisdom,made the audiences very accepting of the presentations,’ said Zhu Yunxiang.

According to Dr Zhu, the national goals of China are a coherent and harmonious society with education as a top priority. He described education as the number two or three industry in China. The government indicates the desire to adopt positive aspects of the Western culture, while drawing on its own ancient traditions and maintaining its cultural integrity. The delegation offered a perfect solution to Chinese audiences, showing how Consciousness-Based Education is profoundly in accord with the deepest values of Chinese ancient culture, while incorporating the most up-to-date theories of modern science.

Dr Hagelin brought out the correlation between the Unified Field of all the Laws of Nature, the Chinese concept of the Tao and the Unified Field of Consciousness experienced during Maharishi’s Transcendental Meditation Technique, the technology of the Unified Field, the practical aspect of Maharishi’s Vedic Science.

The Chinese people, an extremely intelligent and practical people, responded positively to hearing the extensive practical benefits of Consciousness-Based Education and the practice of Maharishi’s Transcendental Meditation Technique. Dr Ashley Deans, director of Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment in the United States, spoke on the success of Consciousness-Based Education. Dr Michael Dillbeck presented research findings, showing the benefits of Transcendental Meditation in all areas of life.

In addition, during the tour, Dr Fred Travis, Director of Center for Brain, Consciousness, and Cognition at Maharishi University of Management showed how the brain changes during regular learning, under stress, and during practice of the Transcendental Meditation Technique. He demonstrated how brain changes during the Transcendental Meditation Technique are the exact opposite to the changes under stress.

During a presentation to an audience of 500 teachers and administrators, Dr Travis demonstrated EEG readings during the meditation of a Japanese Yogic Flyer accompanying the tour. Dr Travis reported that the audience gasped when he showed them these EEG readings.

Dr Travis said, ‘They were absolutely silent when we showed him meditating for four minutes. It was as though watching the brainwaves gave them the sense of the inner silence during the Transcendental Meditation Technique.’

The enthusiastic response of China is similar to the response of countries around the world to Consciousness-Based Education. Through Consciousness-Based Education each country can safeguard its own cultural integrity, while simultaneously utilising universal scientific principles that benefit all life.

Just as the scientific discovery of gravity revealed a universal Law of Nature that was common to all cultures and nations, the explanation by quantum physics of the Unified Field of all the Laws of Nature and the ability to experience this field through Maharishi’s Vedic Science provides universally applicable knowledge. All nations can shake hands on the basis of the unified foundation at their source.
