Eight Maharishi School students came away with awards at the March 28 competitive SEI Conference Art Exhibition hosted by Southeastern Community College in Burlington. Fourteen pieces were submitted by Maharishi School Students, and eight awards were won.

Winner of first place and honorable mention awards, 11th grader Rain Spotted Elk said, “It was exciting, creative, and inspiring to see other people’s artwork. It was fun to hang the exhibits and to see how a gallery works.”

Fifteen schools were represented in the competition, and each school entered fifteen works, equalling 225 works of art. Categories included best in show, achromatic, chromatic, pen and ink/scratch board, painting-oil/acrylic, painting-watercolor/tempura, printmaking, commercial art/graphic design, mixed media, ceramics, computer-generated art, sculpture, pastel-oil/chalk, photography, and crafts.

Emma Messer-Carroll, judge of this year’s entries, evaluated the entries using the following criteria: creativity, originality of theme, quality of composition, technical handling of the material and basic design principles. “Although I found special qualities in most entries, I used the previous criteria to select the winners,” Messer-Carroll said.
