David George, a Media and Communications major from Brookville, Maryland, served as an infantryman in Iraq with the US Army during the 2003-04 invasions.

After serving in the military for three years, David suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), which made it difficult for him to work or attend college. In spring 2009, he signed up to be in a scientific study researching the effects of the Transcendental Meditation technique on PTSD and found immediate relief from his symptoms.

In December 2009, David participated in a Visitors Weekend at MUM and was so impressed with the community, he enrolled immediately. David also became a spokesperson for Operation Warrior Wellness, a David Lynch Foundation program helping veterans overcome PTSD.

“There is a stigma that comes along with having PTSD, or admitting it,” said David. “I want to get past it, and in order to do that I have to talk about it. I can spread the word and help out other veterans.”

David also noticed the effects of the TM technique in his academic work, and studying seems less of a struggle for him. “My attention to detail in my academics is at a level it has never been before,” he said. “Whatever I want to do, I can achieve it.”

In addition to speaking to veterans, David likes to use his communication skills to entertain. He is focusing his studies on video production and enjoys writing stories, making films, and taking photos. In June 2011, David also learned the TM-Sidhi program.

"As an Iraq veteran recovering from PTSD, David took a huge step when he enrolled at MUM, and while here he has done everything he can to improve his life,” said Gerry Geer, assistant professor of literature and writing. “He is an enthusiastic and committed student, an active participant in other University programs as well, and an eloquent spokesperson for the benefits of the TM practice.”
